A security guard avoided a gang of masked men by pure chance after locking himself inside an ATM cage.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating the attempted robbery after the lucky guard missed being jumped by seconds, after he was followed into the Mccolls post office in Crownhill Road, West Park.
Mandy Marshall, deputy manager at the branch, said the security guard only became aware of the matter after notifications were sent out warning staff to remain vigilant.
She said: He was followed by three men in masks before he got into the cage. He got in before they could get him.
The whole thing took seconds, he was so lucky he got in the cage, so lucky. He didnt even realise what was going on.
DC Matthew Woods said of the foiled Tuesday September 17 raid: A post office security custodian had been doing a cash drop/collection at this location.
As he entered the store he went to replenish the ATM.
